As the Safety Specialist with Metro’s Waste Prevention and Environmental Services (WPES), you will play a primary role in making sure the waste transfer stations, St. Johns Landfill and the Metro Paint facilities are operating safely for customers, staff and contract operators. Close coordination will be required with Metro’s contracted operator at Metro’s Central and South transfer stations. A high level of attention to safety is required at the Solid Waste Transfer station facilities. These facilities have a hazardous waste program which accepts many different types of waste from the community and small commercial generators. Facility staff perform a variety of duties, including responding to on site emergencies and conducting community events to collect waste.

What you will do
In this role, you will develop, implement and maintain health and safety programs; ensure compliance in safety and risk matters; conduct accident investigations; prepare corrective action recommendations; implement policies and procedures; ensure the solid waste facilities meet or exceed all regulatory and safety standards; collaborate with Metro’s Risk Management department; and coordinate activities with internal work units and outside organizations. Additionally, you will have a primary role in the planning, development and implementation of safety programs using an equity lens to ensure alignment with Metro’s goal of advancing racial equity and the 2030 Regional Waste Plan.

Experience and education
We will consider any combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job. An example of relevant experience and education would be:
• Five years of progressively responsible experience in occupational health and safety; AND
• An associate or bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety or a closely related field.

Additional requirements:
• A valid driver’s license with at least two years of driving history and a clean driving record.
• Possession of (or ability to obtain within three months of employment) current CPR and First Aid certification. Must possess (or obtain within six months of employment) First Aid, CPR and AED instructor certifications in order to deliver training for staff.

• 24-hour HAZWOPER certificate
• HAZWOPER Incident Commander training
• FEMA 100/200/700
• Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
• Occupational Safety and Health Technician (OHST)
• Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)
