This position supports EH&S goals of fostering communication and coordination within the department and with the campus community by working collaboratively with other EH&S staff and campus stakeholders to facilitate the delivery of service, while supporting the Campus Principles of Community. This position is responsible for the creation and modification of campus-wide safety policies, programs and associated resources. An important part of this work includes outreach to campus stakeholders and assisting departments in the implementation of campus-wide policies, programs and individual department safety plans. This position will provide direction and assistance in customizing safety plans and resources to ensure they are feasible, effectively implemented and in compliance with regulatory requirements. As part of the EH&S Industrial Safety team this position will apply professional knowledge and serve as a technical resource on campus-wide safety topics including but not limited to:
• Fall protection,
• Control of hazardous energy,
• Equipment operation and machine guarding,
• Confined spaces,
• Cranes and hoists,
• Aerial devices,
• Powered industrial trucks,
• Electrical safety,
• Ladder safety,
• Sprain/strain reduction, and
• Slip, trip, fall prevention.
In addition to the specific safety program work listed above, this position is responsible for conducting on-site hazard inspections, job hazard analyses, risk analyses, accident investigations, and responding to client-specific service requests. To be effective in this area the candidate should have both hazard identification experience and strong soft skills as they will engage and collaborate with supervisors, department safety coordinators, staff and student employees to understand hazards, their contributing/root causes, and assist campus partners in finding effective solutions to control or eliminate identified hazards. This includes verbally gathering facts and discussing findings as well as writing effective and concise communications. Follow through and strong customer services skills are needed as this position provides guidance throughout the solution implementation process to ensure departments have the support and resources they need to be successful.
UC Davis utilizes a learning management system with a safety library that covers a large breadth of industrial safety topics. There are some topics and situations however, that require instructor lead training. This position will be responsible for the development and delivery effective training and resources based on injury prevention opportunities, identified safety improvements needs and to ensure regulatory requirements are met.
This is a career position with room for professional development that will work under the direct supervision of the of the Program Manager for Laboratory, Radiation, X-ray, Laser, Field and Industrial Safety and the guidance of the team lead for Industrial Safety. As part of the EH&S Department and Industrial Safety team this position will be provided with a strong network of subject matter experts across different disciplines including but not limited to Environmental Compliance, Biosafety, Industrial Hygiene, Laboratory Safety, Emergency Management, Fire Prevention, Occupational Health, Ergonomics and Risk Management.
