The EH&S Academic School Coordinator for the School of Physical Sciences has primary responsibility to develop, organize, and implement environmental, health and safety programs policies and procedures to reduce losses and risks, and to assure compliance with federal, state, campus, and local laws and regulations. This position places emphasis on locations and operations involving hazardous materials or devices (e.g. biological, chemical, physical, radiological) and advises on the safety of administrative and teaching spaces. The main efforts of the EHS Academic School Coordinator are to minimize risk to the university by effectively tailoring programs and advising faculty, researchers, staff, departments, and school leadership while meeting minimum compliance with local, campus, state, and federal requirements. Serves as the technical expert in several of the following disciplines: Laboratory Safety, Radiation Safety, Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, and General Safety including Fire Life Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Ergonomics, Hazardous Materials, Hazardous Waste, and Environmental Protection. Problems are complex and may require creation of new methodologies by applying professional EH&S knowledge and expertise. Serves as the technical expert for Physical Sciences in the development, implementation, dissemination, and integration of programs within several fields and disciplines. May represent EH&S regarding Physical Sciences at meetings and conferences involving academic compliance committees, campus, system wide, local government, state, and federal levels of authority in matters related to fields of expertise. Will make decisions based on established procedures, integration and interpretation of relevant laws, regulations, and organizational policy; professional best practices; relevant science methodology, impact on other EH&S programs; and senior management approvals. The EHS Academic School Coordinator for Physical Sciences has a dual reporting relationship with the Assistant Dean of Physical Sciences and the EHS Associate Director and receives general direction and assignments from both.

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health and Safety or related field and / or equivalent experience/training
• Eight years of professional experience, the eight years should include at least two years of program development experience and minimum five years’ experience working with EH&S and safety programs
• Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills, including advanced political acumen and skill to effectively communicate with diverse constituencies in a highly political environment
• Ability to communicate effectively even in difficult circumstances with various audiences. Ability to work cooperatively with University officials and regulatory agencies
• Advanced or expert knowledge and skill in applying and interpreting applicable local, state, and federal regulations and related standards, guidelines and, as appropriate, recommending updates to organizational policy
• Working knowledge of the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 40 (Human Health & Environment)
• Working knowledge of California Titles 8 (Safety), 19 (Fire Prevention) and 24 (Fire Construction)
• Advanced skill in mentoring or overseeing the work of other EH&S technical and professional staff
• Advanced analytical and organizational skills to organize, prioritize, and manage the successful completion of projects within budget and time constraints
• Advanced or expert knowledge and understanding of a broad range of EH&S fields and familiarity with all EH&S fields and their application to an academic institution with research laboratories as well as administrative offices, teaching, and general use spaces. This includes but is not limited to: principles and practice of safety management, occupational health and safety, ergonomics, industrial hygiene, biological safety, radiation protection, fire safety, environmental protection, hazardous waste management, and emergency management
• Advanced skill to effectively represent the organization to campus leadership and academic staff
